Students will have the chance to play, learn and listen to Irish music this spring when the Irish Music Club begins.
Kayla Roberts, 19, is its founder.
“I wanted to start the club when I was in high school, but couldn’t,†Roberts said. “Now that I am in college with more free time and where it is easier to meet people, I thought it would be a great idea.â€
The club will be advised by Dr. Michael Nielsen of Media Arts, who plays the harp and has a love for Irish music.
“There is no specific criteria for a student to join,†Nielsen said. “Students don’t even need to know how to play an instrument, but it would be a plus.â€
Roberts has been playing the violin since the third grade and is ecstatic about the opportunity in front of her.
“We just would like the members who have an interest in Irish music,†Roberts said.
The idea for the club is to have it take place either on campus of off in a relaxing environment, possibly over a dinner type get together listening to Irish music.
There is no official name for the club yet.
“Right now, we only have three members, but when we reach five we will sit down and think of one,†Roberts said.
While there is no specific agenda that the club has, they hope to one day perform for others.
“We might perform at the coffee house of Delaware friends and folk, which is held every third Saturday,†Nielsen said. “Hopefully in the near future we will be able to perform on International Night at Wesley.â€
The club will offer students the ability to explore a different culture and the chance to connect to an Irish history while learning a new talent that they may not even know about.
