The Wolverines men’s basketball team kicked off this year’s season with a winning 3-2 record.
Junior Guard Eric Selby is playing his role on the team making sure that all of his teammates stay focused.
“I’m just trying to be a leader on this team,†Selby said. “If I see my teammates messing up, I try my best to work with them until they get it right.â€
The Wolverines set out to repeat the previous season by making the playoffs, but hope to go further than just the first round.
“Practice makes perfect,†Selby said.
Some players are putting in extra hours in the gym to stay on top of their game.
Sophomore Guard Devon Davidson returned to play his second year as a Wolverine.
“I try to go to individual workouts as much as I can with the assistant coaches to improve my game,†Davidson said. “I try to gain as much as I can from every workout, hoping that it will result into more playing time on the floor.â€
Some players said they were experiencing a dramatic change.
Junior transfer guard Jacquard Hagan said he is doing his best to help his team get as many wins as possible.
“Adjusting from my old team to my new one has been a big challenge for me,†Hagan said.†“I’m just going to continue to get better so that I can help my team out as much as possible.â€
Coach Jerry Kobasa said he was taking a new approach.
“Making the schedule harder this year is one of the approaches that we are taking to have I better season,†Kobasa said. “I believe that my players can get better if they are playing better teams.â€
The coaches are continuing to stick with the game plan.
“During the season we are constantly trying to develop our players so that the can receive more playing time,†Kobasa said. “If our players are doing all they can to continue to get better, then rotating players in and out of the game will be way easier.
With key injuries to the key players Eric Selby and Darryl Johnson last year, the team suffered because unexpected changes had to be made to the rotation.
“The dynamics of the team was changed last year because of all of the injuries to some key players,†Kobasa said. “Since the team is injury free this year, we have gotten off to a better start.â€
