Sandy Relief

The Black Student Union and Spanish Club teamed up Nov. 14 and raised more than $700 for Hurricane Sandy victims.

The organizations sold Chipotle burritos and Chic-fil-a sandwiches and nuggets. By 11 p.m. when the event ended, everything was sold out – all 100 burritos, 50 bags of chips, 50 12-count nuggets and 50 chicken sandwiches.

“You can donate and enjoy food at the same time,” said president of BSU Kyle Pequeno. “I was amazed at the turnout and the support that the students showed towards Sandy victims.”

Students said they loved the idea.

“It’s amazing that BSU was the first group to make a dent for the Sandy relief,” said senior Tatiana Arthur. “After all, everyone knows Chick-fil-a and Chipotle are popular restaurants for students.”

She said she loved that BSU and Spanish Club discounted all of the food from their actual prices at the restaurants. All items were $5 for one item, $9 for two items or $15 for three items.

“To make a deal for the students was remarkable,” she said. “They set the stage for competition for other organizations on campus.”

The president of Spanish Club, Charlesha Harris, said she wanted to help with Hurricane Sandy relief, but didn’t know how at first.

“We can’t go to New York or New Jersey,” she said. “But, we did this knowing all the money is going there.”

She also said it benefitted the Spanish Club.

“We’re a new organization on campus,” she said. “It was a great way to promote our club and to help other people.”

Courtney Manhertz said she was happy all of the proceeds are going to hurricane relief.

“Giving back is important,” she said. “People are doing a great job for driving the effect to help support something that affected so many Wesley students.”

More than $130 million has been donated to the Red Cross for Sandy relief. Money donated goes to delivering food, shelter, emergency kits and additional necessary items, like clothes and shoes. Still accepting donations, the Red Cross promotes its website as the best way to donate, at www.redcross.org.

“Thanks for all those that came out and donated to the cause,” Pequeno said. “You can expect big things from BSU and Spanish Club, so keep on supporting.”
