Thirteen women on campus have made history by chartering the first historically black sorority here at Wesley. “The Lucky 13” chartered the Tau Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., on Nov. 18.

These women are also known as “The AKA’s.”

LaDarius Thompson, coordinator of student affairs, helped bring this historically black sorority to Wesley College’s campus.

“I feel that this is another opportunity for the women of Wesley to become involved,” Thompson said.

The sorority plans to help make things better here at Wesley.

“We plan to assist Wesley in their endeavors to reach out to the community by creating programs under our initiatives, and one of them is emerging young leaders,” said Ashley Jones, a member of the sorority.

“The sorority plans on helping young leaders, by encouraging them to speak up on what is right and be confident in everything they do, by encouraging them to make a difference,” Jones said.

African American students have been trying to get sororities and fraternities from the Divine Nine here. The Divine Nine consists of the nine Black Greek Letter organizations.

“I listened to the interest expressed by several students asking for additional sororities, especially the historically black ones because we have none on campus,” Thompson said.

“Our sorority will empower College women of all races,” said Caitlyn Field, a member of the sorority. “We plan on standing as role models by talking to the younger generation and letting them know how important they are to the future and motivating them to learn from our mistakes.”

Thompson plans on trying to get more historically black Greek Letter organizations on campus.

“I think it’s pretty cool that the ladies got a chance to make history,” freshman Gregory Moore said. “I hope next semester we get some black fraternities here so maybe I could get a chance to do the same.”
