Freshmen Mariah Harris, Hnida Harris, and Aniah Coley use the new systems in the Underground
“This is a good work out if you don’t go to the gym,” said freshman Mariah Harris. “You can have fun with your friends and work out at the same time.â€
Installed two weeks ago, Coordinator of Student Affairs Ladarius Thompson came up with the idea, adding two new flat screen TVs and two X-box consoles, each with a Kinect.
“When I first got here, I had an opportunity to sit down with the students who worked for the Underground and really asked them what is the Underground missing,†he said. “It was a huge open space with lots of opportunities and one of the problems people told me about the Underground was that there are not enough things to do.â€
Along with the new electronics, the Underground still has its pool tables, ping-pong tables, and study tables.
Underground manager Amanda Jester said students have enjoyed the new additions.
“Its going well,†she said. “It was a good decision and a great investment, and hopefully we get more games to our collection.â€
Some of the games offered in the Underground include: Call of Duty 4, NBA 2K12, and Madden 12.
Freshman Aniah Coley said she likes having the X-box consoles in the Underground.
“I think it’s nice,†she said. “We have something to play in a comfortable zone with our friends.”
Thompson said he isn’t done with the Underground just yet.
“We’re phasing in more things like computers and Ipads for a study area,†he said.
Thompson said he hopes to create more study area options for students, rather than just the library, especially since the Underground is always opened.
“Once they leave the library they can go to the Underground for a stress-free environment, “ he said.
