Charleston S.C. – The Wesley Wolverines dominated Charleston Southern during that school’s Homecoming weekend, rushing for more than 334 yards to beat the Buccaneers 33-20.

The win for the Wolverines gave them the honor of being the second Division III team this season to defeat a Division I-AA school.

Askia Jahad, and Steven Kousossou led the way for the Wolverines, each contributing more than 100 yards each.

With 9:39 to go in the first period, Wesley scored their first touchdown. Koudossou found the endzone after a 77-yard scamper on a reverse handoff. Jahad quickly scored again on an 18-yard run, capping a 95-yard drive with fewer than two minutes in the quarter.

The Buccaneers were left scoreless at the end of the first quarter.

Charles Southern made a cut in to Wesley’s lead in the second. An interception by the Buccaneers’ Matt Hardy set up a 29-yard field goal that put the Bucs down only 10. CSU went in to the half trailing 13-10

The Wolverines opened the second half with a 60-yard drive. The drive ended in a 20 yard touchdown run by Jahad. It was the second touchdown for Jahad in the game.

The next drive ended in the same result for Wesley. The Wolverines went 73 yards in just six plays. Quarterback Shane McSweeny ended the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run that made it 26-10.

The Bucs kicked a field goal on their next drive to cut the lead to a two score game 26-13.

Wesley answer right back with a 12-play, 58-yard drive that nearly devoured all the time remaining in the game. Wesley’s drive ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass from McSweeny to Sean McAndrews.

The Bucs scored again to make the score 33-20, but by this time there wasn’t enough time.

Jahad rushed for 153 yards on 23 carries and scored twice. The Wolverines rushed for a total of 334 yards compared to just the 319 total yards of offense gained by the Buccaneers.

McSweeny had a solid performance, going 12-15 for 126 yards and one touchdown. McAndrews caught 5 passes for 54 yards.

The defense proved to be Wesley’s focal point again, holding the Bucs to just 20 points.

Chris Mayes led the team with 8 tackles, including three for loss and a sack. Mike Asiedu helped out with 8 tackles as well. Defensive back, Leon Jones came away with an interception as well.

The win was Wesley’s second straight over a Division I FCS opponent after defeating Iona 23-12 in 2007, but its first over a scholarship FCS program in school history.

The Wolverines return home on October 8 to host Frostburg State on Homecoming Weekend at Wesley College.
