Junior Erica Howell proposed at the first Student Government meeting that Wesley adapt the Student United Way.

“We will be impacting the Dover community,” said Howell, the president and founder of the new organization. “Three main areas we’ll be focusing on are education, health, and income.”

The Student United Way began its “lame duck” process of 13 weeks.

“It’s their trial period to show they’re committed to the SGA mission,” said Tanner Polce, SGA president. “Organizations often get involved, show up for a month and then drop off the face of the earth. That’s not acceptable. This is a trial period, so [the members] can meet, plan and gradually reach out as a working organization.”

Howell is taking Dr. Jessica James’s sociology course, “Contemporary Social Problems,” which connects with the goals of the Student United Way and Chaplain Erica Brown.

“Erica Brown is our [organization’s] advisor,” Howell said. “She has a lot of connection in this community.”

Sarah Smith, director of student activities and adviser of SGA said the United Student Way has a great national background and backing from the national organization for success at Wesley.

“There’s thousands of clubs under the umbrella of the national organization of United Way world-wide,” Smith said. “I hope [Wesley’s organization] hits their target of people who are interested in this subject.”
