Dr. Jeffery Gibson is Wesley’s Honors program new director.

“[It’s an] opportunity to work on a strong program and to look at things and improve what other have worked on,” Gibson said.

The Honors program was added to Wesley in 2005, to give academically talented and motivated students enriched courses to study subjects not offered in regular classes.

Students in the Honors program are given a Presidential scholarship along with other scholarships based on merit and academics, and are offered the chance to live in the Honor’s House.

The program is available to all students as an opportunity for students to exercise their intellectual abilities and develop critical thinking skills for future use, Gibson said.

The transition for Gibson into the new program was “pretty easy.”

“Dr. Urbanas couldn’t have been more helpful,” Gibson said.

Gibson has several new ideas for this year, including trips to the National Press Club for the Book Fair and Author’s Night in November, and to the Folgers Shakespeare Library, and museums in Philadelphia.

Gibson hopes to be more hands-on in the recruiting process.

“I’d like to travel to schools in New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania and set up appointments with guidance counselors and have campus visits for prospective students,” he said.

Gibson encourages anyone interested in applying for the Honors program.

“It isn’t just for certain students, anyone who is interested can apply,” he said.

Students have to have at last a 3.3 GPA.
