Exact change for printing

Sophomore Savannah Bruce said she wishes her ID card could work when she wanted to print something for class.

“It would be more convenient instead of using coins because then I do not have to go out my way to get the same exact change I would need,” she said.

Some students complain about paying to print their college papers because they said they know students at many other schools do not have to.

Aside from the first two weeks of printing being free, the cost to print at is 5 cents a page.

Sophomore Ellen Felton said she printing should be free because she pays enough money in tuition.

“I should not have to pay for print in black and white ink because tuition money should already go toward it,” she said.

Some programs and departments offer free printing, including Science and Multimedia Communications.

Dr. William Kroen, Chair of Biology, said they have science computer labs that allow printing only for upper-level students who are working on projects.

“Generally, we do not give the codes to first or second semester students” he said.

Kroen said the science department’s budget can only provide so much paper and cartridges.

The chair of the Multimedia Communications department, Dr. Tery Griffin, said the department’s 4-color printer is only available to students taking certain classes such as digital imaging, and digital illustration.

“We also keep the printing room locked unlike before because it used to be in the basement of the library where the lab was and everyone would use it because the people down there would let them in,” she said. “It is too expensive to let everyone use the 4 color printer for free.”

Jessica Olin, director of Parker Library, said she and others in the library are talking to vendors about free printing.

“We are working on changing things around so students do not have to use change to print but instead can use their ID,” she said.
