Students Find Ways Around Enforced Dorm Policy

Some students say they can easily get around the newly-enforced dorm rules, by going in through back doors or by avoiding sign-in times, and coming back after sign-out.

“I think that it is a good idea in theory, but I don’t think that it really accomplishes anything,” said Danielle Reid, a sophomore. “Because, if I have a friend that comes in at 7:50 p.m., they can be there and no one would know if they stayed the night.”

New Student Life Dean Wanda Andersen ordered the rules enforced, said Kevin Hansbury, director of residence life.

“This is not anything new in higher education,” he said. “Many other colleges and universities have some sort of a greeter in their residence halls.”

Some students feel as though the new policy is keeping students from their nightly activities.

“The freaks come out at night,” Muse said. “No one is going to come inside of a dorm from 8 to 12:30. They are trying to get in around 1 to 3 in the morning. In order to improve the policy the dorms should be monitored 24-7.”
