RAs Stay Up Later to Follow Dorm Rules

Many students say they are not happy with the inconvenience of the sudden change in residence hall policies – policies that have been on the books for years are now being enforced.

The newly enforced rule is “guest sign-in,” beginning at 8 p.m. From 8 p.m. until midnight weekdays and 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. on weekends students must sign in their guests. Enforcement began spring semester 2014.

“The new dorm policy involves staff members (Residence Assistants) who sit in the front lobby of each residence hall to greet and sign students in and out,” said Kevin Hansbury, director of residence life.

Some students who live on campus were unfamiliar with the new dorm rules.

“I am not too familiar with what the new policy is except that we now have RAs sitting in the front lobbies monitoring students coming in and out,” said sophomore and Roe Hall resident Bryheim Muse.

The difference in the dorm policy is only enforcement, Hansbury said.

“In the past we did not have staff stationed in the front lobbies but we did have staff on duty to patrol the halls,” he said.
