Wesley College’s Student Government Association has been busy lately. Along with putting in new card swipes at College Center’s basement doors that lead into the Underground, the organization is implementing first-time elections for class representatives. They also approved a new organization.
The card swipes in College Center only go into effect after midnight.
“I think starting the swipes at midnight is fine because I didn’t even notice them until recently when I tried to get into there at 1 a.m.,†said freshman Alec Laise.
SGA Chief of Staff Savannah Durham said the SGA wanted more card swipes.
“We’re hoping to add more around the campus for safety precautions,†she said. “But each one costs $2,500.â€
SGA holds a most Mondays at noon in CC 206. Different organizations gather to discuss anything ranging from budgets to putting new stop signs around campus.
Meetings are headed by SGA President Kira Tieman, who recently worked side by side with Wesley College’s Head of Security Walt Beaupre to put in the new card swipes.“SGA is dedicated to improving security measures on campus and will continue to be the advocate for students,†Tieman said.
In March, SGA will introduce elections for representatives of each class (freshman, sophomore, junior and senior).
This is to encourage more involvement from more individuals, said SGA advisor Dr. Cynthia Newton.
“SGA is the voice for the students,†she said. “In a perfect world I wish every student would be involved.â€
Durham said the SGA said it is working on producing a weekly newsletter after their congress meetings to inform the student body what was talked about, and what is soon to be happening here. The newsletter will be available to everyone later in the afternoon of the meeting.
“This gives students information to questions they might have about SGA, and what is going on around campus,†she said.
At its first meeting, SGA also voted to allow a new organization on campus. The first, The National Society of Minorities of Hospitality (NSMH), is an organization for minority hospitality students. It addresses diversity and multiculturalism, and also career development. The program was founded in 1989 at Cornell University. It is a non-profit student run organization.
