Homecoming saw many activities on campus the week of Sept. 30.

Monday night was make your own tie-dye shirt, Tuesday was movie night, Wednesday was wax hands, Thursday was the fashion show and Friday was the pep-rally.

LaDarius Thompson, who resigned as the director of campus life, planned the events.

The first activity, make your own tie-dye T-shirt in College Center, was sponsored by the Students Activities Board (SAB).

“I think making your own T-shirts shows diversity and shows how students can be creative in their own way,” said Korey Thomson.

At the event, 20 students participated and more showed up throughout the night. The organizers ran out of white T-shirts.

“It was cool, fun just throwing T-shirts into colors,” said Quiana Nixon. “It’s a good stress reliever. I just didn’t like how my colors turned out.”

Wednesday night, the Black Student Union sponsored the Homecoming Fashion Show. Many students and faculty packed Wells Theater. The models wore four different designers, one of whom was from Wesley College. There was also a performance from the all black sorority AKA.

The Pep Rally on Friday got students ready for the football game the next day. Fans munched popcorn, chewed cotton candy and drank smoothies while watching a performance from the cheerleaders and alumni Marian Bond who graduated last year.

“I was supposed to perform at the Varity show but it was postponed,” Bond said. “So I asked if I could perform tonight. I also came home to see my friends.”

Bond performed “Run The World (Girls)” and other Beyoncé songs.

“The crowd’s energy always adds to the performance,” Bond said.

The new Director of Campus Life, Waverly DeBraux, hired last month, ran the tie-dye shirt event and was involved in the other Homecoming week events.

“There weren’t many activities planned before Homecoming because my position hadn’t been filled yet,” he said. “There hasn’t been anything planned yet (after Homecoming), except for Comedy Night, by the Student Affairs Office. We were focused on Homecoming week to start.”

Wanda Anderson, dean of students, said there are more activities planned by organizations for the rest of the semester, including Thirsty Thursdays, art nights, movie nights, weekend bus trips, a Halloween event and Swag Swap.

She also said there’s going to be a first-year student leadership retreat coming up on Nov. 16 to Camp Pecometh.

“I am sure that there will be a number of other events hosted by other student and Greek organizations,” she said.
