Carly Brown’s only been at Wesley for a year, but she’s already taking sophomore classes. After she’s finished her summer courses, she’ll be a junior.
“I want to graduate in three years,†she said. “I’m taking summer courses and Wesley’s summer courses are cheaper than in the fall or spring.â€
For a three-credit course in the fall or spring it costs $5,049, including Carpenter housing and a meal plan. For that same course this summer, it costs $1,830 because housing in Carpenter is free.
Summer classes cost $220 per credit while fall and spring credits cost $912 a credit. The meal plan for the summer will be $192 per week.
Dr. Jeffrey Gibson and Dr. Jack Barnhardt spearheaded the initiative to offer more courses for Wesley students this summer, a total of 38 courses on-campus or online, with terms of 3, 6 or 12 weeks.
“We needed to improve the visibility and to increase the offerings across a broader range,†Gibson said.
He said that, in the past, the courses for the summer have been determined by the faculty.
“If there’s a faculty member who wants to teach courses, then they can,†he said.
Barnhardt said the goal now is based on student needs.
“It’s more deliberate to see what courses students need,†he said. “We’re trying to avoid and reduce the courses that have two or three students who sign up but there aren’t enough students to run the course.â€
Gibson said graduation time is also on their minds.
“It also helps with the increased amount of students who want to graduate early,†he said. “We want to change the culture of the college, but make it so students can plan for the fall, spring and summer.â€
Brown said she’s taking mostly online classes this summer.
“It’s less time consuming and you can work on your own time,†she said. “However, they are harder because you don’t have a teacher constantly reminding you to do the work by deadlines. I’m organized, so I think I’ll be okay with the online courses though.â€
Some of the courses running are based on full fall classes. The list of courses for summer might still be growing.
“I’ve emailed students who have overfilled one of my fall courses to see who might be interested in taking it as a summer course instead,†Barnhardt said.
There are more than 300 students enrolled in online and on-campus classes, including the Dover campus, New Castle campus, and Dover Air Force Base campus.
Some students may be eligible for financial aid when taking at least two summer courses.
“I’m definitely taking one class,†said sophomore Gracie Daniels. “If I can get financial aid, I will probably take more. I want to get my electives out of the way so that I can focus on my education classes.â€
Daniels lives two hours away and said she prefers to stay at home for the summer.
“All of the classes I’d want are online, so I can still stay at home, which I like,†she said.
