Sophomore Jasmine White is making her name known on campus.

She’s running for vice president of SGA, after being its secretary.

“I wasn’t really involved as a freshman,” she said. “The more I got involved, the more I wanted to do. As secretary, I don’t always get a say in the meetings because I’m writing the minutes.”

She said she also thinks other people should have an opportunity to be secretary.

“I want someone else to get that experience as secretary and then move up myself,” she said. “I know it’s going to be a challenge, but I’m up for the challenge.”

As a psychology major with a political science minor, she’s preparing for her career, but she knows there will be challenges.

“The toughest thing, if elected, would probably be speaking out,” she said. “I want to get my opinion out, but sometimes you have to be the bearer of bad news.”

She also said that SGA officers are expected to know everything about anything on campus.

“People come to you always looking for information and you don’t always know the answers,” she said. “You have to be on your P’s and Q’s because everyone’s always watching.”

She said she knows she can overcome the challenge.

“I always want to know more, and I have no problem asking questions,” she said. “I’ll never give an answer if I don’t know the answer 100%. I’ll get contact info and find the answer to help.”

She said she holds herself to a high standard.

“You can’t always give people what they want but you can try to do as much as you can for them,” she said.

Junior Hawa Turay said she met White as a freshman and she believes she’ll do a good job as vice president.

“We cheered together,” she said. “She’s so sweet and funny. She’ll do an amazing job as V.P. She’s honest, disciplined and hard-working.”

She said she wishes her the best of luck.

“I know that whatever she does, she’ll excel at it.”

White has plans for Wesley if she gets elected.

“I think we need shuttle buses to places like Wal-Mart or the mall,” she said. “I’m not sure if anyone’s tried this yet, but I want to find more information.”

She also wants to improve the safety with drinking on or off campus.

“Students go out on the weekends,” she said. “It’d be nice if they had some kind of contact to call so they didn’t drive drunk or injure themselves. It’s something else I want to look into.”

She said she hopes she can broadcast the fact that SGA has a suggestion box.

“I want people to give suggestions,” she said. “I want more people to come to our meetings and be comfortable. I don’t want people to think they can’t come in if they’re not involved in an organization. It doesn’t matter. I still want them to come and have a say.”
