“I’m grateful there’s no opponent,” she said. “But if I did have an opponent, it would’ve allowed me to see who wanted and earned it more. Sometimes I want the competition, but then again, I’m fine without it.”

She said she wants to be the SGA secretary because she wants to be more involved, even though she’s a part of more than just one organization, including: Black Student Union, where she currently serves as Vice President; Gospel Choir; P.U.L.S.E. mentor; and President of Zimmerman R.H.A.

“I want to become SGA secretary because SGA has to do a lot with on-campus activities,” she said. “I want to be a part of that. I also want to be a part of the changes on campus and the decision-making for those changes.”

She said she has a couple of ideas of what she wants to change at Wesley.

“I really want to bring the unity among the different types of ethnicities together,” she said. “Usually, we see the African American students sitting together, the Hispanics sitting together, and so forth. I really want to mesh all the races together.”

Junior Charlesha Harris said she’s proud of Janel for running, even if there is no opponent.

“I met her my freshman year in a music class,” she said. “We’re best friends school-wise and I’m really excited for her. I’ve seen her grow a lot from freshman year. I feel like a proud mother.”

Harris said she knows McCray will serve SGA well.

“She’ll be focused, diligent and do what she has to do,” she said. “She understands the responsibility that the position holds and she won’t let herself or BSU down.”

As she was secretary and now vice president for BSU, she said she thinks she has a lot of experience to bring to the table.

“BSU is one of the largest organizations on campus,” she said. “I feel like if I can take part in leading that organization successfully, then I can do it for SGA as well.”

Senior Kyle Pequeno, president of BSU, said he’s confident McCray would do a good job.

“Janel is really reliable and responsible as a student leader for BSU,” he said. “If you ask her to do something, she’ll do it and she’ll do it on time.”

He said that he thinks she’s a good leader and that she has the right qualifications to be successful.

“She was secretary of BSU before Vice President,” he said. “I think she’ll do fine. As a leader, she has a bright future.”
