Wesley’s men’s soccer team finished off their season with a win in overtime against Cairn University.

The Wolverines finished the season with 5 wins, 10 losses, and 2 draws.

Although disappointed, head coach Steve Clark said that the strength of the Wolverines schedule may have been a factor.

“It’s been frustrating,” Clark said. “My approach was to play the best teams we could and so much worry about the result but playing good competition would make us better in the long run.”

Clark said that his team was extremely young and is currently in the process of learning how to play college soccer.

“Most of the squad is freshmen and sophomores,” Clark said. “To their credit they have continued to practice and play hard each game.”

Senior mid-fielder Les Ragan echoed his coach’s thoughts on the season.

“We had a young squad this year,” Ragan said. “We struggled with injuries in the beginning of the season and didn’t get the right results in the close games.”

Dan Featherer, a senior mid-fielder, said that the season wasn’t the best but he has no regrets.

“It was a decent season considering the guys that we had,” he said. “We had a really young team with a lot of freshmen and only six seniors.”

The Wolverines struggled the entire season for the most part but Clark believes that his team has a good future ahead if they keep working hard.

“I always prefer the word retool instead of rebuild because that sounds like your giving up on winning,” Clark said. “Sometimes you have to go through these hard times to learn.”

Clark said that he doesn’t regret giving his team such a tough schedule but says there could be some things they do differently next year.

“I think next year we’ll still have a tough schedule because the top lads really do want to play the best,” Clark said. “I do need to give the team an opportunity to taste victory and build their confidence.”
