Stink bombs, vomit in the bathrooms, disruptive behavior after quiet hours – Carpenter Hall may hold the title of the worst residence hall on campus.

During a residence life meeting several weeks ago, residence advisers addressed these specific problems. Former Dean of Students Mary Alice Ozechoski said at the meeting the atmosphere in Carpenter has to change.

“This is the worst residence hall on campus,” she said.

Residence assistants and faculty members agreed, addressing the lack of good conduct in the hall, the unhygienic practices of residents (including a student spreading his feces all over the walls in the boy’s bathroom on the first floor), and the general lack of respect.

Carpenter Hall was made into an all-freshmen dorm this fall, the only freshmen dorm on campus that is co-ed.

“It’s taking a while for them to adjust, getting used to being away from home,” said residents assistant Jasmine Burrus. “They’re taking advantage of their freedom. Once they see what college is about, they will mature with time.”

Burrus said there is a lot of horseplay in the dorm and other students from Gooding and Williams come to Carpenter.

“I feel like we’re the most talked about because this is a co-ed freshmen dorm and outside residents come here to hang out,” she said. “There are rules in this hall and people have to follow them because this is a community.”

Students who do not follow the rules are subject to fines up to $250.

Mike Kragh, a resident in Carpenter Hall, said that he enjoys living in Carpenter.

“I have a good experience here,” he said. “I feel like I have a lot of friends and everyone gets along.”

However, Kragh said that he thinks it’s OK to have fun, but residents need to be able to draw a line between fun and inappropriate.

“It’s one thing to have fun, but some people don’t know how to control themselves,” he said. “No one is used to all of this freedom and free time, and people just want to have fun.”
