During his last year of high school, Marcolin Bray never studied.

His first year at Wesley is different, and he’s using a resource at Wesley’s Academic Resource Center to help him.

Bray studies with his music on and the TV off so he can focus. He reads over the material, moves onto the next subject, and then goes back to the first subject and repeats the cycle until it sticks in his head.

Bray passed most of his tests this year. The only tests he has trouble with are accounting.

Wesley’s Academic Resource Center (ARC) provides students with help in learning how to study and to get tutoring.

“I am in the process of getting an accounting tutor there,” Bray said.

Freshman Robert Spencer’s study habits also changed from last year.

Last year, he said he did not have to study because high school teachers spent more time on the material than here.

This year he has to review his notes and textbooks. Spencer studies with music and has to be by himself. He studies his notes repeatedly, uses flashcards, and writes down things he cannot remember.

Junior Travis Alano changes his study time every day around his daily activities.

“I study by myself upstairs in the library in complete silence,” Alano said.

Alano did not study as much last year. This year he’s seeing an improvement in test scores.

I don’t use the ARC because I don’t need it,” he said. “I go to my professor or ask my peers to look at my papers.”

Alano is more motivated to study this year because he is in an organization that requires him to keep his grades up.

Bray’s goals this year includes graduating with at least a 3.0 grade point average.

“My goals are to be on the dean’s list both semesters and graduate with honors like I did in high school,” Spencer said.

Alano’s goal is to get a higher GPA than last year (3.5) and to get more involved with organizations.

The ARC offers tutors for every subject. The ARC is open 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday. 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
