Although Wesley is small, it still takes some effort getting around campus. Freshman Robert Brown and Dan Maya just grabbed some food from the cafeteria. They plan on eating at their dorm and going back to class after.
The Student Life office has maps for freshmen and new students who may need them.
They’re hardly ever used.
“I’ve had the same ones [maps] for a while,†said Amy Tanowski, administrative assistant from the Student Life office. “But they [students] will come in here [the Student Life office] and ask. They like to get directions that way.â€
Most freshmen at Wesley College don’t need maps to find their way around the small campus. Beside, they’ve already taken tours, asked directions, or went looking for themselves.
Some even came before school started.
“I came before the semester started so I would not have a hard time,†said Ben Lykens, a freshman. Lykens said he also took a tour of the campus that was given by Mr. Paul Olsen.
Lykens said he has not gotten lost – yet.
Andrew Layton, an admissions counselor at Wesley, said that most students take tours of the campus, which start at the Admissions Office then go to the College Center. From there, prospective students tour the underground, dorms, cafeteria, mailroom, the labs in Cannon and Wells Theater in Slaybaugh.
Layton said that tours are held all year long, the busiest times at the end of fall and the beginning of spring because of prospective students looking at their options for colleges. Tours are also given during open house and new student orientation.
“We’ll always try to focus on the College Center because it is the heart and soul of the campus.†Layton said. “We also encourage tour guides to put their own spin to them [tours] by showing them [groups] different buildings they are interested in.â€
“The tours helped.†said Elauna Simms. “They [tour guides] said the names of the halls, (like “This is Dulaney Hallâ€), and different buildings.â€
Simms also said that she asked for directions either from anyone that was around her or from Student Life, as well as looked for some of her classes before they started; she did not really use the map.
“The map was hard to follow,†Simms said. “I think I like used it once.â€
Kerrie-Lynn Wetterau, a junior at Wesley, said that it was not hard for her to find her way around campus and it has gotten easier over the years.
“I had late classes and I would ask my roommates if they had been in that building,†Wetterau said.
Joel Reinhardt, who is also freshman, said that he has not gotten lost either.
“It’s a small campus,†he said.
