Union N.J. – The Kean University Cougars snapped Wesley football team’s 28-game regular season winning streak – and a 14 game regular season road streak – when they defeated the Wolverines 31-28 on Sept. 10.
Wesley also dropped from third to 15th in the NCAA rankings for Division III teams.
Wesley led 6-0 early but headed into the second quarter trailing 17-6.
The Wolverines did not reach the end zone until late in the second quarter. By this time, Kean already put up three scores with a blocked punt, a touchdown pass and a field goal.
McSweeny put a 13-play drive together ending with a touchdown pass to Sean MacAndrew’s for eight yards. The Wolverines went into the half trailing 17-14.
The third quarter showed a more confident Wesley team. The defense held Kean scoreless, and McSweeny was able to tack on another touchdown to give the Wolverines the lead. McSweeny and Matt Barile hooked up on a 73-yard catch and run to make the score 21-17.
However, early in the fourth quarter, Tom D’Ambrisi threw a 50-yard touchdown strike to Lester Smith to give Kean the lead 24-21.
Wesley maintained the ball and scored late in the game.
But with only two minutes to go, Kean drove down the field and scored with only 1:18 left on the clock. D’Ambrisi and Tj Denehy hooked up on a 11-yard touchdown pass.
Wesley had one last chance to score, but the Wolverines turned over on Kean’s 20-yard line with 50 seconds remaining.
McSweeny finished the game with a season high 311 yards and four touchdowns. Linebacker, Mike Asiedu led the team with nine tackles.
The Wolverines travel to Maine to play Husson University on Sept. 24.
