The Wesley College soccer team started the 2011 season off with a big win over the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins.

Last year, the Wolverines tied the Griffins 0-0.

This year, the girls took the game away at the start when freshman Kelly Edmunds scored in the 14th minute, with an assist by senior and Captain Kim Fearnbach.

“After the first goal went in, I was really excited because we scored so early in the game,” said sophomore midfielder Sam Lyon.

The Wolverines were not content with a 1-0 lead, however, whenMia Brocco, a junior off the bench, scored with 17 minutes left in the half. The assist came from Lyon.

Only four minutes later, the Griffins were awarded a penalty kick.

The Wolverines led as the second half started by just one goal.

Junior Kim Juhas upped her stats when she scored from a free kick just five minutes into the second half.

The women’s soccer team finished the game with a goal by last year’s top scorer, Fearnbach, with yet another assist going to Lyon.

Sophomore defender Sam Barker is impressed with the direction the team is taking.

“It was a great feeling because it showed that the past is the past and we have a bright future ahead of us.”

The next time the Wolverines take the field, they will be competing against Marymount at Marymount. The game is scheduled for Sept. 15 at 8 p.m.

Last year, the women fell 2-1 to Marymount.
