The King of Wings fended off stiff competition to retain his crown.

Sorority Theta Phi Alpha held its annual Wing Bowl in the Den March 21.

Contestants paid $5 to participate.  Proceeds went to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Students gathered around the table to watch the nine competitive eaters.  Wings were placed in plates in the middle of the table, along with plates full of blue cheese and ranch dressing.

A confident C.J. Bode, last year’s winner, took a seat in search of his second straight Theta Wing Bowl victory.

“On your marks, get set, eat!” announced timekeeper Emilie Milcarek, and contestants had five minutes to chow down.

When time was up, the wings were counted.  Over 150 wings were eaten by the nine competitors.

C.J. Bode achieved his repeat victory with 31 wings, an 8-wing improvement over his total from last year.

“This year was a little easier because I could grab wings from all the plates,” Bode said.

The competition was much closer this year. Last year Bode ate more wings than second and third place combined, he said.

This year, Teri Jackson came in second place by devouring 22 wings; three tied for third place at 20 wings.

“People have stepped their competition up,” said Bode.

The prize was a gift certificate to a restaurant, but Bode may not be in the mood for chicken wings for a while.
