Wolverine football is working its way to the top.
“We as a team are excited to be in the playoffs,†said junior Justin Strickland. “But we understand that we cannot be happy with being here to accomplish the goals we set before the season began.â€
The team advanced to the quarter-finals of the NCAA Division III Football Championships Saturday after beating Montclair State 44-7 in the second round.
Wesley scored twice in the first quarter. Marcus Wilson returned an interception of 52 yards to score the first touchdown.
Chris Cummings scored with a two-yard run after the team charged 77 yards down the field in only four minutes.
Ellis Krout caught a 9-yard pass from quarterback Justin Sottilare to score again in the second quarter, and kicker Dan Tyron’s 46-yard field goal gave Wesley a 23-point lead by the end of the second quarter.
Montclair did not appear on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter.
Wesley led 37-0 when Montclair State’s quarterback, James Melody, hit receiver Dan Keegan for a 25-yard touchdown.
Wesley remains undefeated for the season, with a 10-0 record.
In the first game of the championships, the Wolverines defeated Muhlenberg 53-14 (WHAT DATE?).
“We must use discipline and execution to place ourselves in a position to win during each game in the playoffs,†Strickland said.
Wesley was also awarded the top seed this year in their bracket.
The Wolverines will play Mary Hardin-Baylor Dec. 14 in the quarter-finals.
Mary Hardin-Baylor defeated Thomas More 69-7 in their Nov. 27 game.
