With a final score of 22-5, Wesley’s new intramural ice hockey team won its home opener against John Hopkins University.
There were friends, family and students in the stands.
“It was amazing to see such a great turn-out for our first home game,†said Matt Bartalini, a freshman. “That made the team feel great.â€
Most members of the team made goals.
“It felt good to win our home opener and to show these fans we are here to play,†said Danny Treisler, a senior.
The previous game, however, was not as triumphant.
Wesley lost 6-5 in overtime against American University in Washington, D.C.
By the end of the second period, Wesley was losing 4-2 and had 22 penalties.
In the third period, Treisler, Jacob Mitchell and John Kirk all scored, bringing Wesley’s final score to 5.
In the final 55 seconds of its first game ever, the Wesley ice hockey team tied Mechanicsburg 3-3.
Nerves were on edge at the end of the first period when Mechanicsburg led 1-0, but by the end of the second, Wesley was up 2-1.
The first goal came from Jake Mitchell, the second by Earl Johnson.
“Watching the puck go into the net and being the first hockey player to score a goal for Wesley was the best rush of adrenaline I ever felt,†Mitchell said.
In the third and most critical period, Mechanicsburg took the lead 3-2, but during the last minute of the game, Danny Triesler tied the score.
“Making the tying goal was exciting for me,†Triesler said. “I did my team proud.â€
