New security officer
Henry Powell, a 1996 graduate of the Delaware State Police Academy and certified police officer, joined Wesley’s security staff. Powell served in the U.S. army for eight years, and has worked as an officer for the Dewey Beach and Ellendale Police departments.

Student life’s new admin assistant
Amy Tarnowski is the new administrative assistant in the student life office. She graduated from Grand Valley State College in Michigan with a double major in Marketing with logistics emphasis and Business Economics.

Third Floor Renovations
Anonymous gifts and the Aramark staff helped renovated the third floor of the College Center. With the new lighting and paint, artwork from Lon Fluman, Susan Johnston, Connie Imboden, Richard Sharpe and Dr. Jeffery Mask line the walls.

Science Department News
Dr. Malcolm D’Souza, professor of chemistry, received a grant this summer to renovate the biology storage room. With the $72,000 IMBRE grant, the new storage room now meets required safety standards.

D’Souza was also selected as a finalist for a mentoring award.

D’Souza also co-authored a paper that was presented at the International Conference on Physical Organic Chemistry in Korea in August.

Senior Brian Mahon, a biological chemistry major, co-authored a peer-reviewed paper that was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences in July. D’Souza mentored Mahon in the INBRE sponsored research project.

D’Souza, Mahon, Matthew McAneny and Ghada Alabed, 2010 alumni, presented two posters at the Third Biennial National Idea Symposium of Biomedical Research Excellence in June.

Jordan Wheatley and Stefan Hailey, both Wesley alumni, were co-authors on these.

Dr. Richard Kashmar, associate professor of chemistry and physics, presented his poster, “Description of an Alternative Freshman-Sophomore Chemistry Sequence and an Analysis of Student Performance,” at the Middle Atlantic Discovery Chemistry Project meeting in June.

The National Science Foundation awarded Wesley $281,676 to install wireless and renovate its Cannon Hall labs. The money, gotten by Dr.Malcolm D’Souza and Dr. Keka Biswas, is part of a science project, “Transitioning Undergraduate Research in Science at Wesley to Meet the Challenges of the 21st Century.”
