Sex! Hollywood! War! Outlaws!
Those are just a handful of the courses offered by Wesley during its 3-week May term.
“Courses are a little different than what you would get in a regular term,†said Dr. Patricia Dwyer, vice president for academic affairs. “Professors try to think of courses that work in a short time frame and will fulfill course requirements.â€
Some courses include “World War I in America,†“Sexual Reproduction,†and “The Last Blast: Hollywood’s Engagement with the American Outlaw.â€
Dr. Jeff Gibson tries to make his May terms classes interesting.
“It’s an opportunity to teach special topic courses that I can’t teach during the rest of the year,†Gibson said.
He will be teaching, “The Gothic: Literature and Film.â€
General core courses also will be offered.
Junior Lauren Koepper will be taking Chemistry for Allied Health.
“I wanted to get a better grade in the class and thought it would be easier to take it alone than with other classes,†she said. “It is good to have a condensed course, and there is not too much material,†said Dr. Jack Barnhardt who will be teaching “Advanced General Psychology.â€
Students who live on campus during the school year are able to live in their dorm rooms for no extra cost. They are required to purchase a $400 meal plan though.
“I’m moving into an apartment for the next school year so I will be staying there,†Koepper said.
Some May term classes are canceled if there are not at least eight students.
While Barnhardt had to cancel his May term course last year, Dr. Gibson has usually had 18 to 20 students sign up for his May term course.
“Mine may be cancelled if not enough students sign up for it,†Koepper said. “I think the classes need to be advertised more. I only knew that it was offered in the May term because other people I know took it last May.â€
