The Wesley Democrats are back.
After several years of inactivity, freshman Travis Ragland, now the president of the organization decided it was time to make it active.
“I decided to take initiative and I talked to Beth Fisher,†he said.
Wesley Democrats, a local organization, are trying to become national by joining the College Democrats.
The organization is trying to recruit new members by attending open houses.
“We are also talking about trying to get a y-shirt fund, and we would like to sponsor a trip to D.C.,†said vice president Natalie DiSabatino.
The Democrats recently chose their executive board, which includes sophomore Trevor Kling as secretary, and freshman Jessica Barranco as treasurer.
The Wesley Democrats meet Wednesdays at 4 p.m. in the Underground.
In contrast to the Wesley Democrats, Wesley’s College Republicans are a nationally-affiliated organization.
“We are always looking for new members,†said Ivana Lebron, president. “We are a very relaxed and open-minded group.â€
Lebron is campaign manager for Ron Poliquin, a Dover attorney running for Delaware state representative.
The organization is involved in Poliquin’s campaign. Some members will be given internships.
The College Republicans recently traveled to Washington D.C., to attend the Conservative Political Action Conference, the organization’s biggest event of the year.
At the conference, conservative activists gather to speak and make presentations.
The College Republicans meet on Thursdays at 3:15 in the underground.
