Designed to protect students, the Clery Act was enacted in 1990.
Originally named The Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, it became the Clery Act after student Jeanne Clery was murdered in 1986 at Lehigh      University.
The Clery Act says that all schools must publish a report every year by the first of October containing three years worth of campus crime statistics and security policies.
Wesley College also sends out text messages to students to inform them of the more serious events that may happen on campus.
“Students, staff and faculty need to know about events that occur on campus or even within the area,†said senior Amy Maguire.
The office of safety and security also keeps a daily crime log of reports of campus crime that is available to students.
“If the texts are coming less, then it means less is going on, which is good,†said junior Ryan Hubble.
Walter Beaupre, director of safety and security could not be reached for comment.
The punishment for campus security or police that violate the Clery Act is a fine of $27,500.
