Last season, the women’s basketball team finished 17-13 and lost the ECAC South Championship Game.
While eight players from that squad returned this year, the team lost two of those players to injuries early, and another did not return for the spring semester.
The injuries may have played a role in the team’s 4-4 stretch over the winter break. Currently, things are on the upswing, as they have won seven games in a row to improve their overall record to 11-6. They are in third place in the CAC Conference.
The men’s team is currently on a 4-game win streak, while the girls are on a tear, winning their last eight games.
Both teams most recent victories came against York Jan. 23. The women won in strong fashion, 79-61. Freshman Jazmine Miller led all scorers with 23 points.
“The 5-game losing streak was hard to deal with,†said captain Angela Owens, a junior. “Injury plagued us at first. But now, my outlook is really good. Players are getting healthy, morale is high, and were really jelling in to a team.â€
Owens leads the Wolverines in scoring and rebounding this year, averaging a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds a game.
Despite facing injuries, the women’s team is confident about the season.
