Team Purple Urples, intramural kickball champions, celebrate after the final game of the kickball season.
About 170 students participated in intramural kickball earlier this semester.
“There has been an increase in the number of participants in every league run since January,†said Amanda Kinkade, director of residence life and coordinator for intramural sports.
Shane Miller, a junior, played on the kickball team Greek Elite.
“For being the first time we had the sport, it was fun, but I’d like to see it a little more organized rules-wise,†Miller said.
Other students say that the games should have been promoted more around school
“I think that it should have been more adverÂtised around school, but my sorority sisters and interested members came out to support me,†said junior Holly Crittenden, a member of team APD.
Team Purple Urples won the kickball champiÂonship on Oct. 7 against team Global Gym, and will be entered into the Intramural Sports Wall of fame.
Kinkade says she is very pleased with the fans that show up to the games.
New leagues also have been added since last year.
Kickball and flag football are new this year, Kinkade said.
Miller already has a team ready for volleyball, which starts Oct. 19.
“I’m very excited,†Miller said. “I think we have a very good team.â€
About 120 students participated in indoor socÂcer and 140 in dodgeball, Kinkade said.
“It is our goal to accommodate as many teams as possible,†Kinkade said. “The more WolverÂines that we can get involved in recreational acÂtivity, the better.â€
Kinkade said once the competitions are held in Wesley West, there will likely be games that officials will have to ask fans to leave because of overcrowding.
Students also hope to see additional intramuÂral teams form.
“I’d like to see a basketball league formed,†Miller said.
A one-day ultimate Frisbee competition will be held this April.
