Wesley experienced a messy weekend the night of Sept. 19.

It was so bad, the Student Government Association agreed to give a Dover resident a formal apology and pay for the damages that a student caused while breaking the resident’s mailbox off of its post.

On the same evening, a fight broke out at the Wesley West Dance.

There also was general fighting in the streets, said Mary Alice Ozechoski, Dean of Students.

She warned that if incidents like this were to continue to happen that the Dover police would be “let loose.”

SGA’s apology, given at its Sept. 21 meeting, was a one-time deal, some representatives said.

During its meeting, the SGA also voted to replace the college’s 18-year-old mission statement.

“Although the student government has endorsed the proposed mission statement, it is still a good bit from becoming finalized,” said William Johnston, the president of the college. “The Board of Trustees will be responding to the proposed statement and they may wish to recommend changes.”

The proposed statement was developed by college professors Mika Shipley, Robert Contino, Kathleen Curran, Jeffrey Mask and Constance Strickland.

The SGA also announced the possibility of a new organization coming to the college.

“Up til’ Dawn,” affiliated with St. Jude Children’s Hospital, would be a campus-wide fundraising organization that helps fight childhood cancer, sickle cell anemia, AIDS and other deadly diseases.

The group is dedicated to providing health care to children in need.
“This is a fantastic community service and philanthropic event we should take on as it would be great as the first

one in Delaware,” SGA President Amberlyn Oldham said.

Students stay “Up til’ Dawn” and enjoy a night of entertainment while raising funds.

More than 230 campuses participate nationwide. Wesley would be the first Delaware college to join.
