Parking is an even greater problem this year at Wesley.

Although enrollment has increased, no parking spaces were added, giving students more to worry about than just class assignments.

“When I come for my afternoon classes, I have to park further away from campus, often in dangerous spots,” senior Caitlyn Kearney said.

But there have been no reported incidents, said Walter Beaupre, director of safety and security.

“Parking areas on campus are as safe as any other,” he said. “We have not had any reported thefts from vehicles or damages to them.”

Wesley has 380 parking spaces available for students in the parking lots, Beupre said. “Plus street parking.”

Students should only park where Wesley security patrols if they are unable to find parking spaces on campus, he said.

Beaupre said that State Street, Pennsylvania Avenue, Delaware Avenue and American Avenue are the safest streets.

“As always, we ask that students, faculty and staff always lock their cars and remove any valuables,” he said.

Commuting student Erica Jacovini, a senior, is annoyed that students like her usually have to park on the street if they arrive after the morning classes.

“It’s not fair that teachers and students living on-campus have their own parking lots,” she said.

In order to park in the college parking lots, students must purchase a parking permit from the Safety and Security office.

“Last year we issued 645, and so far this year we’ve issued 465,” Beaupre said.

The number of parking permits issued in one year is unlimited.

“The biggest things we give tickets for are students parking in the faculty lot and students that don’t have a permit,” Beaupre said.

Students who receive three or more tickets will have their car booted.

“It is in the campus master plan to purchase additional land to increase parking for the campus community,” Beaupre said. “There are four additional large parking lots projected in the plan.”

The campus master plan, however, spans over a ten year period, and it is unknown when the new lots will be created.

“The master plan is being presented to the Board of Trustees for approval soon,” said college president William Johnston.

“Expanded parking is part of the proposed plan. However, there is not a specific date that new parking will be available.”
